I Got Hooked! It's More Fun in the Philippines

It's been a few days since the Department of Tourism launched its 2012 campaign. And its new slogan "It's more fun in the Philippines" I can say has been successful since its inception because it has created a buzz online, leaving the netizens hooked into digging up their creative minds to come up with their own More fun in the Philippines caption.

And, yes, I am among those who got hooked. Today, I searched on my archives, downloaded the Harabara (the official font) and did quick editing to come up with my own version of It's more fun in the Philippines. I will do more of these as I travel and explore the Philippines. It's viral, it's addicting and IT'S FUN! Try it! :P

When visiting Laguna, I'm sure you've heard of this popular place called Nuvali in Sta. Rosa, developed by the Ayala Land, Inc. The first thing that comes to my mind whenever I hear Nuvali are the Koi fishes! Yes, it has this man-made pond and it has hundreds of hungry koi fishes (see photo below) and you get to feed them. And no, I haven't seen them face to face yet-- sad to say, when I went there for the first time last month, the pond is under renovation and it's all drained up, so no koi fishes for me. Well, I can always go back as soon as the renovation is done.

What I like about Nuvali, just like any other Ayala Land projects, is that it is filled with greenery, thus the free access to fresh air and nature. Nuvali Evoliving as what they call it, combines family, recreation and work all in one community centered to preserving and caring for the environment to make sure there will be more left for the next generation. I guess we should put more like this all over the Philippines, don't you guys think?

Subic Food Trip: Meat Plus Cafe and Steakhouse

Subic in Olongapo, Zambales is known to most of us as a place to buy cheap imported goods because of the duty free shops that sprouted like mushrooms all over the former naval base; second: Subic is a place you would fall in love with if you are a fan of the sun and the beach. Yes, that's probably what Subic is best-known for, but there's more to that to tell you honestly. And I'm not talking about extreme sports, water adventure, zoo or whatever. This time, it's all about FOOD.

One of my recent discoveries in Subic is a restaurant/cafe you will surely love if you are a fan of anything meat especially of steak. Meat Plus Cafe, as the name implies, serves different kinds of meat dishes and is famous for its delicious and affordable steaks: Topsirloin steak, Tenderloin steak, New York steak and a whole lot more choices of burgers, pasta dishes, salads and pastries.

The place is not hard to find actually. It's literally few steps away from two duty free shops. And FYI, Meat Plus is already an institution here in SBMA and your visit to Subic will not be complete unless you dropped by at Meat Plus. It started its operation when Subic was still a US Naval Base which catered to American soldiers, and continuously satisfying the cravings of today's generation.

Meal prices range from Php200-400 depending on the set order. I ordered Roasted Beef Belly- delicious, yes, but I like the Grilled Pork Ribs more because the serving is huge. Here are some photos to drool over. :D

Mactan Island is just one of the many tourist magnet destinations in the province of Cebu because of its beautiful beaches and breath-taking views of mountains and coastlines. And if it's your first time to visit the province and you want to quickly jump off a white-sand beach, Mövenpick Resort & Spa formerly Hilton Cebu Resort & Spa is one the best near-airport hotel choices. Yes, Mövenpick is just a few kilometers away (a roughly 10-minute drive) from the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, both of which lie in the Lapu Lapu city territory. It also very close to the Mactan Shrine where the famous statue of Lapu Lapu is erected.

There are actually a lot of hotel options along the eastern coastline of Cebu. Some of the neigboring hotels of Mövenpick are Shangri-la Mactan and Be Resorts, to name a few.

Aside from the private beach, there is also a large pool and a floating restaurant walking distance along the coastline. During the night, you'll get serenaded by live music performances in the open-air bar and restaurant of the hotel. And of course, one important requirement for the earthlings in today's generation, internet access- yes, there's FREE WIFI access everywhere. In fact, you can still get a strong wifi signal even when you're on the farthest side of the shore.

The room rates? Well, knowing it's Mövenpick, it's really not cheap. But as I've said, since it's THE Mövenpick, their rates I guess is just reasonable, considering the awesome services and amenities. It's actually Mövenpick's first hotel venture in the Philippines. Affordable Luxury Vacation: Lewis Grand Hotel, Pampanga

Last Halloween, instead of spending the night with booze and some same-old scary costumes, we decided to to just "wash" it off and soak up the sun. We gave the holiday a new kind of twist which is very much different from how we celebrated it in the past. This time, a very relaxing and "satisfaction guaranteed" vacation with friends.

We checked-in at Lewis Grand Hotel, located in Friendship Highway, Clark Perimeter in Pampanga. I actually didn't expect too much because the room rates are quite affordable, comparable to a typical so-so hotel. In fact, our Deluxe Suite which is good for 4-6 adults is only Php 3,910/night (check out their website for room rates)- way way cheaper than ehem, Hotel Vida in Clark. And boy, the experience is way above than I expected! In Tagalog terms, sulit na sulit (it means getting more than what we pay for)! :P

From the outside, you will notice it's simple yet elegant architecture- it's white, clean and smells new (haha). But as you enter, starting from the lobby, it's as if you're checking into a classy resort hotel that you would normally see in Boracay or Cebu; well, probably because it's still new. It has 5 floors, a restaurant/bar with pool/billiards table, a very nice swimming pool with bar, a jacuzzi and wifi access in every room - all FREE! And they offer free shuttle service to SM Clark and Fields Avenue, too.

Lewis Grand Hotel is perfect if you want to just spend time over with your family without having to spend too much. The location is so strategic because one: it's near SM Clark and Fields Avenue; and two: during special events held in Clark like the all-popular Hot Air Balloon Festival happening every February, Lewis Grand is one absolute spot to check in. One of the best locations to view the ever serene and recently controversial Taal Volcano is through the side of Tagaytay along the strip of Aguinaldo Highway where hotels and view decks are lined up to cater to tourists. We randomly "checked-in" (we didn't actually check into their rooms) at Taal Vista Hotel and I was so happy and surprised because they have the perfect viewing podium for shutter-happy dudes like me; with all those elevated tiny hills, lush greenery and shades- perfect for family picnic or a coffee by the garden!

Enough said! Just want to share to you guys photos from my first ever visit to Tagaytay and my first ever encounter with THE Taal Volcano. :)

Eco-friendly Delsey Green Days Backpack for the Techie

I recently bought a laptop bag and it's my favorite so far. It's a backpack from Delsey's Green Days luggage collection which I bought at Travel Club in SM City Clark. Probably one of the luckiest days of my life because they were on sale that same day- not just a typical sale, but a staggering 50% off! The original price is Php 2,940 and I got it for only Php 1,470! Imagine that savings! :)

The backpacks come in two colors- Brick (maroon) and Anthracite Grey (the one I have). What I like about these bags is that they are eco-friendly and are made with renewable materials, without the harmful PVC coating, thus they are called Green Days luggages. About 45% of the materials used is PET polyester made from recycled mineral water bottles- now that's something big for mother earth, huh?

The Good

Although it may seem lean from the outside, you can actually put a lot of things inside. As in my case, a typical photowalk routine, it can accommodate my 13" Macbook Pro laptop, a Nikon D3000 DSLR, along with their chargers, my wires and connectors, my toiletries and a set of clothes (light t-shirt, shorts and undies) should I feel the need to change after an intense walk.

The main compartment which is made for the laptop/gadgets has this specially made lockable zippers so you can clamp it in for safety.

The not-so Good

Yes, you can put a lot of stuff inside but it could have been a lot better if a couple more pockets were added so things can be more organized. It actually has one sub-pocket inside the main compartment. There is also a secondary compartment in front where I put my wires and chargers; and one small pocket on the side for other small stuff.

Overall, I am super satisfied with the Delsey Green Days Backpack considering it's price and multiple functionalities. If you want this bag, go visit any Travel Club stores. Hurry up because according to Travel Club, Delsey only distributes 2 for each luggage model to authorized resellers nationwide.

Subic: Beach Weekend and All Things Edible!

There is nothing more satisfying than to spend an entire weekend under the sun, in a beach and pig-out as if there's no tomorrow- and spice it up with the company of some great friends! That's what we exactly did few weeks ago in Subic. Francis, a good friend of mine licked this trip into shape way back, but it's just recently that all of us got to finally agree with the schedule. I've been to Subic a couple of times but this experience is one hell of a fun trip! The beach and I are really not good friends but right after this experience, I am missing it so badly. :(

From Manila, we took the bus going to Subic. It's a roughly 3-hour trip. Thanks to my Huawei pocket wifi; traveling long hours on the road is not much of a struggle anymore. It's touchdown Subic Bay Freeport Zone at around 10:30AM- just in time for lunch. Haha! After a few hours of walking and wandering around, we finally reached our destination - Swell Bar and Cafe.

Swell Bar and Cafe is not the usual "bar" or "cafe" that you're probably thinking. It's a few steps away from the beach and radiates that laid-back, easygoing feel as if you're living the life of a freewheeling urban youth- carefree, happy-go-lucky cheerfully irresponsible (haha!). Well, that's how we were during our stay there. It's breezy; the smell of the beach is just so inviting. By the way, Swell offers paddle boarding experience for those who wish to enjoy the beach in a new and exciting way.

Hacienda Macalauan: Home of Gatas Tisoy and Lavish Scenery

When I was in Laguna, I had the chance to visit for the first time a dairy farm and see hundreds of cows (and bulls. Yes there were bulls, too!) being raised for fresh milk. Thanks Grace Nicolas for touring us around Laguna! Hacienda Macalauan, located at Brgy. Mabacan, Calauan, Laguna, is one of the biggest sources of dairy products in the province and famous for their fresh milk without added antibiotics, growth hormones or any other chemicals.

Too bad I didn't see/experience the actual milking process of the cows because if I heard it right, they do it late in the afternoon, and we visited the place just right after lunch. Hacienda Macalauan actually imports their cows from New Zealand and Australia that is why they look bigger than our local cows, and they obviously produce more milk! The cows undergo a special dietary plan and intensive maintenance to ensure they produce the best tasting and high quality dairy products while preserving the milk's nutritional content.

Inside the hacienda you get to encounter a lot of relaxing and breathtaking views of nature like hot springs and mini water falls. You won't even imagine that there is such a place inside a dairy farm. This is my kind of life! So serene, laid-back and very relaxing.

Aside from full cream milk, one of the most popular products of Hacienda Macalauan is the "Gatas Tisoy" which covers a wide selection of dairy products like chocolate milk, white and cottage cheese as well as yogurts. You can actually get them from leading supermarkets nationwide. I personally loved the chocolate milk. I have never tasted anything like it. I dare you guys to try it and see for yourself.

Food Tripping: Doing the Things I Love

Nothing identifies us Filipinos other than the food we eat, our cuisine. So on this post, I will be sharing some of my memorable food trips around the Philippines.

In case you didn’t know, there is an on-going “star search” (naks) for the first ever Soo Pinoy Ultimate Food Blogger. Soo Pinoy aims to introduce different Filipino cuisine along with the history and the best places to find these dishes. I know! This is another “Pilipinas Tara Na!” opportunity so I took this chance to join this so-called “star search” for me to get to know more about the rich Philippine culture. As a travel and food blogger (and a self-proclaimed tourism ambassador), I always make sure that I take a snapshot of every place I go to and share it on my blog so that I can help in promoting Philippines in my own little ways.

With Soo Pinoy’s campaign, discovering, exploring (and digesting, literally and figuratively) our very own Filipino cuisine made me think this is something that I should never miss in my lifetime. Honestly, for almost 2 years of travel/food blogging, I have only encountered few places where they serve great Pinoy food probably because I was raised in a Kapampangan household with good cooks so my standard for great food is way above the average hah! ;). So I hope I’d be given the chance to get a taste of the Philippines and be called the Soo Pinoy Ultimate Food Blogger.

Despite the strong winds and heavry rains caused by typhoon Quiel, we still decided to brave the storm and push through with our Baguio trip. Well, we actually had no choice because we already booked into the hotel and the fact that I hate cancelling trips especially when my bags are packed and I'm all set- certainly a mood killer!

It was actually my 4th time to visit Baguio. This time we stayed at Hotel Elizabeth which is just within walking distance from top tourist destinations in Baguio City. The rains didn't stop us from exploring the city. Mind you, we even bought rain coats so we can walk around and take photos. We went to Minesview Park to have a photo op with the famous and photogenic St. Bernard dog (actually, there are a lot of them here posing like models). We also visited the Good Shepherd Convent and bought some of their signature products like Ube Jam and Ensaymada.

The 1st Blogapalooza: Bloggers & Businesses Unite

I was one of the few lucky invited bloggers to be part of the first ever Blogapalooza organized by Radio DJ Vince Golangco of WhenInManila.com with the help of some more amazing people. Actually I was the earliest bird to register at the venue! Straight from from Pampanga, I decided to meet with a couple of friends while waiting. But since we're just a couple of blocks away from Fully Booked (Bonifacio High Street), the official venue of Blogapalooza, I decided to drop by and register early. And voila! THE EARLIEST BIRD! Don't you guys think I should've gotten a bonus for that? Haha kidding!

By the way, to give you an idea, Blogapalooza is a community wherein bloggers and businesses meet to share, interact and mutually perk up each and everyone. This is a great opportunity for businesses to present their products to influential people online. In return, bloggers get to receive giveaways and treats from these businesses wishing to be promoted and introduced to the online community afterwards.

While waiting for the event to start, we had a couple of photo ops with blogger friends. I also took this chance to walk around and take photos of the event. I was with my Blogwatch Friends, Jane Uymatiao (Twitter: @philippinebeat) and Grace Nicolas (Twitter: nobodybutgrace) and some of my blogger friends Bino Bautista (damuhan.com), Xander Catiero (aboynamedxander.com) and John Michael Bueno (kumagcow.com). The event started around 1 in the afternoon; but before that, free lunch was served courtesy of Itallianis, Healthy First and Aqua Best; and oh, the carrot blend from Healthy First is so delish especially the carrot-strawberry flavor. Size Matters also served giant burgers in between the events.

Exploring Ifugao and the Banaue Rice Terraces

When visiting the Philippines, the northern part of the country is usually one of the many places tourists are flabbergasted of. And among the many tourist-friendly provinces up north is Ifugao. Travelers flock here all year round to enjoy the magnificent panorama- high mountains, fresh air and most importantly the breathtaking pillars, the Rice Terraces.

The Rice Terraces in Banaue, a municipality of Ifugao province, is among the UNESCO World Heritage sites because of its unparalleled beauty. Often dubbed as the "Eighth Wonder of the World", the 2000-year old Banaue Rice Terraces is one of the country's pride to humanity. And for me, I call these ingenious architectures as the "Stairways to Heaven" because as you can see, the mountains were literally carved down to form these giant stairs looking like giant stair steps from afar. The ancient tribes of Ifugao sculpted these terraces with their own exceptional agricultural tools and skills; indeed a representation of the natives' distinct culture and tradition as well as their unique identity as Filipinos.

I was lucky to be able to visit this UNESCO World Heritage site and it makes me even more proud to be a Filipino. It is a roughly 8-hour drive from Manila to the municipality of Banaue and I tell you, it's quite a bumpy and zizaggy ride up the mountains. Good thing we have a skilled driver who can swiftly take sharp turns smoothly. And the fun part of our trip is yet to be told... After we had our lunch at the Banaue Hotel, that’s when our mini adventure began. We all hopped on top of the jeepney and went around cliffs and mountain tops to explore the beautiful Banaue Rice Terraces. We went down on one of the mountains to meet face to face the rice terraces and the natives. Some of them even offered us to try their native dresses! Cool!

Overall, it was one hell of trip up there. Looking forward to visiting this paradise again. Go visit Banaue soon and see for yourself nature’s beauty at its most serene state.

Barkada Confession: We Love John and Willy! (Farmer John's Potato Chips and Wild Willy's Chicharrones)

I am not a fan of "chichiryas" ever since. Well, I at least get to eat some either when my nieces and nephews are around or during a beer inuman session with friends. That was then, and I guess things will never be the same anymore. I recently got hooked into eating chichiryas, thanks to the recent and successful first ever Blogapalooza event held on September 17, 2009.

Here how this life-changing situation happened. LOL! Right after Blogapalooza, I met with friends for some barkada session and quality time (It's a Saturday night for alcohol's sake!! Booze!). And when you're with your barkada, two of the things they first notice about you are (1) what you wear [Uuy saan ang binyag?! Congressman ah! etc. etc.] and the (2) stuff you bring; in this case, a big loot bag full of treats and a big Leslie's plastic bag loaded with Farmer John's Premium Potato Chips and Wild Willy's Real American Chicharrones of different flavors which I got from the Blogapalooza gathering. Guess what, in 3-2-1, everything was gone! Good thing I was able to taste each of the different flavors.

And my verdict? Naaah, I will let my friends do the talking just so I won't sound like a decoy. That same night after we met, everyone just suddenly went online on Facebook to confess that the chips I brought tasted so gratifying and they actually craved for more! It seems like some kind of gayuma (potion) was injected to these snacks and everyone agreed with each other- a very unusual, abnormal, strange and unbelievable case because it's very rare that everyone comes up with matching impression! :))

World's Tallest Jose Rizal Statue | Calamba Laguna

22 feet tall, representing the 22 languages spoken by Rizal

Inaugurated during the 150th birth anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal, this record-breaking monument sculpted by young artist Jonas Roces stands tall and proud at the heart of Calamba City. The bronze statue is said to be the tallest statue of Jose Rizal ever erected anywhere in the world. It actually broke the record of the Rizal Shrine in Nueva Vizcaya which stands 18.6 feet.

The statue is patterned with symbolic meanings. First is that it stands 22 feet tall which represents all 22 languages and dialects spoken by Jose Rizal. The 15 steps you have to take to reach the base of the statue symbolizes 15 decades of Rizal; also a little more for Noynoy Aquino being the 15th president of the country. And obviously, it was erected in Calamba city, our national hero's hometown.

The monument is located right across the new City Hall of Calamba and it covers a lot area of 6.7 hectares. It took about 6 months to complete this monument. This project was actually funded by the local government of Calamba and The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PSCO).

Tea shops and bars are becoming a big hit to the Pinoys lately. Gone are the days where Starbucks, CBTL, Seattle's Best, etc. are the only bells that ring each time someone takes a break from the office or a group of friends wishes to spend time over free wifi. So far, there have been quite a number of shops today specializing in milk tea and tea-inspired beverages.

One of my recent discoveries is Happy Lemon in Eastwood Mall. They also have branches at leading malls in Metro Manila (Promenade in Greenhills and Power Plant Mall in Rockwell Center). I actually am not a fan of tea because of the tongue-stinging sensation it gives me. But with Happy Lemon's ingenious and wide array of tea blends, my world suddenly became un mundo al reves (a Spanish phrase which means world upside down). Most of my friends who have been at Happy Lemon before recommended the Rock Salt Cheese series specifically Cocoa with Rock Salt and Cheese (Regular = Php80.00, Large = Php90.00). Guess what? I LOVED IT! I've never been so happy with drinking tea, ever before!

And here's one important TIP you should never forget to make your Happy Lemon experience more enjoyable: DON'T USE STRAW in drinking and don't ever try to mix or stir it. Just sip it straight from the glass. This is the best way to enjoy and savor all the flavors smeared on top. And also, rock salt is not just there to add that salty feel. In fact, salt is an important catalyst in bringing out and amplifying the flavor of a drink. Ooooh, interesting, isn't it?

St. John the Baptist Parish Church, Calamba Laguna

When visiting the province of Laguna, the city of Calamba is probably one of the many popular and must-see tourist destinations mainly because of its historic connotation since it is the hometown of our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal. This is where the young Pepe spent his childhood, grew up and played like any other normal kid.

And speaking of historical significance and culture, a century old church located few steps away from the old house of Jose Rizal is one of the places you don't wanna miss when in Calamba- the St. John the Baptist Parish Church. The church has been declared as a National Historic landmark for this is where Jose Rizal was baptized (June 22, 1861). As you enter the church, you will even see his baptismal record making the place more historical and significant especially to us as well as well as the future generations who only got (will get) to know our national hero through books and word of mouth.

Established in the year 1859, it is one of the major churches in the city. The church was actually put to flames by the Japanese during the World War II but thanks to the efforts of Fr. Eliseo Dimaculangan for it was rebuilt and preserved good as new. Regular masses are held here every day so in case you dropped by near the place, you might want to attend the mass and relive the memories of our national hero.

I am a very outgoing person and I always make sure that I stay connected with my friends. Thanks to Twitter, Facebook, and all those social networking sites. Name it, I’ve got it! With BlackBerry, it is so easy to stay connected with your circle of friends even without a computer.

BlackBerry offers a world of possibilities when it comes to staying connected because of its BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) trademark feature that lets you interact with other people as if you are in front of your computer. Here are some of the BBM features that I love:

1. Send pictures, files, calendar and contact data with a snap of a finger. If you're chatting with someone, you can quickly share a photo, video or contact details and it will be automatically integrated with your contact.

2. Sending location information. BlackBerry Messenger uses GPS technology to send our current location to the person we are chatting with. That way, we can easily share where our current location is. Let’s admit- we sometimes have a poor sense of direction!

3. Voice memos. This is a very interesting feature. Just select a contact and you can directly record and send a short voice clip. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a tone of your voice is worth the same.

4. Groups. In BlackBerry Messenger, you can create groups so you can send a message to multiple users all at the same time and their replies will only be sent to you. In fact, I introduced the BBM group feature to our photography group (The Helios Project International) and we use it for our 24/7 online mobile club membership support, high-speed and real-time inquiries and sending updates about our group at any time and anywhere.

5. Add a contact effortlessly. Using its barcode feature, adding a contact will take you no time. Just ask the person to show you his or her BBM barcode, scan it with your camera and voila! Contact added!

6. And lastly, BBM is a way for me to laugh my heart out even when I'm alone. All I do is I chat with my friends and it's as if they are just beside me. I laugh, giggle and sing my heart out even when I'm all by myself as long as I have the BlackBerry Messenger. :)

CEBU, Philippines: There's Always a First Time for Everything

I've been hearing a lot of great comments and reviews about one of Philippines' largest provinces, the Queen City of the South, Cebu. I can't believe that throughout my 20 plus years of existence, it's only now that I got the chance to step on the Cebuano ground.

Along with three of my friends, we traveled around the city looking like foreigners, stopping by at every corner of the city to take photographs, get along with the people and their traditions and have a taste of their delicacies. We also met a couple of friends because of the Basic Photography workshop that our group conducted during our visit.

We stayed at the luxurious and popular white sand resort and spa of the Hilton Hotel and there, we also made friends with the sun and the shore which was hell relaxing and fun. What I like about the resort is its relaxing ambiance, because unlike Boracay, there are not too many people at the Hilton, which is perfect if you are looking for a place to unwind and relax.

Overall, my first time Cebu experience was pure fun. And I can't wait to visit the province again! Here are some photos of Cebu's famous landmarks and traditions.

Being a country influenced by diverse and rich traditions and cultures from different nations, the Philippines is known to be one of the best food destinations in Asia. Every type of cuisine, you will literally find here. One of the most common I guess is Chinese food since Filipino cuisine is influenced principally by China.

Proof of the Chinese influence in Filipino cuisine is almost in every corner of our country. Chinese businesses especially restaurants and food hubs have spouted like mushrooms. Well, if you are craving for some authentic Chinese cuisine, there is always China Town in Binondo to satisfy your yen. But did you know there is also this Chinese restaurant in Harbour Square Malate which offers fine dining yet at very reasonable prices?

I had the chance to experience the Hap Chan menu when some friends and I had a photo shoot at Harbour Square during the Cinemalaya week. Hap Chan Tea House and Seafoods Restaurant actually falls under three categories. First, it is a traditional teahouse where anyone can enjoy sipping a cup of tea while munching some of their best selling dimsums, congee, etc. Second, it offers fine-dining for those looking for exclusive menu cooked by their well-trained and certified Hong Kong chefs. And don't get confused with the third category; although Hap Chan is known to be a fine-dining restaurant, it also caters plates for casual-dining and full-course meals.

Chef's Quarter: Affordable Fine Dining Restaurant

A couple of weeks ago, we had a short gathering in Ortigas in celebration of the Social Media Day together with my Blog Watch family. Shortly after our meet-up, a couple of friends and I decided to drop by at SM Megamall to find a place for dinner. One of my friends suggested Chef's Quarter. It sounds totally new to me. And as a food blogger, I had no second thoughts in saying YES as this will surely add up to my restaurant review collection. :P

Chef's Quarter offers fine dining at an affordable price range of PhP200.00 - PhP400.00. A combination of good food and elite ambience that even students can afford. The Solo servings are actually huge enough to load up two hungry stomachs and they also have family-size servings. Their plates are big!! One of my favorites is the Panizza although I find the cheese too flavorful. And the Panizza that they served us has no Alfalfa sprouts unlike the one they serve in C'Italian Dining in Clark. But it was a sumptuous meal nevertheless.

Overall, I can say that my first dine-in at Chef's Quarter was absolutely a “satisfaction guaranteed” and surprisingly affordable! Chef’s Quarter sure is the best place for special treats and occasional extravagant blowouts. Here are some of the dishes that we ordered.

Social Media Day is a worldwide celebration initiated by Mashable in 2010. And on its second year last June 30, participants from all over the world grew bigger and became more influential. This social awareness aims to spread real-time information to all parts of the globe and have each and everyone's voices be heard through social networking and the online media.

Here in the Philippines, Social Media Day had a great turnout too. A number of online media groups celebrated SMDay in their own ways. The Blog Watch team also organized a meet up to celebrate the same. As what they say, "disconnect to connect". We met at Figaro Cafe and talked about certain things and issues – one being the future plans and agenda for Blog Watch and how to make it bigger and more influential to the Filipinos.

The Role of Social Media

By looking at our lifestyle decades ago, anyone will be able to appreciate and acknowledge the great role that social media has brought to humanity in our generation. Because of the social networking tools like Facebook and Twitter, the way we deal with life have changed dramatically.

The Social Media has become the people's instant and reliable source of information. Before, it's the search engine that we always consult for fresh news and information. And now, there's Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus, etc.

Through these social networking channels, discovering people who share the same interests as ours was made even easier. In short, social media is being used to expand our connections as well as to meet old and perhaps, new acquaintances.

The power of social media is inevitable. People now demand control of information. And social media has been powering up this craving; something that the corporate media has never done.

Jose Rizal's 150th Birth Anniversary at Fort Santiago

"Rain or shine, the show must go on." The 150th birth anniversary celebration of our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal at Fort Santiago was epic. We, the Blogwatch team graced the evening as if it was a red carpet event - all wearing Filipiniana period costume. We were supposed to be covering the event, but the Blogwatch team ended up being interviewed by the press. :D And oh, I also finally have met the man behind @TweetniRizal twitter account!

Lisa Bayot, a descendant of Rizal graced the press conference. Lisa, along with the people behind MyRizal150.com talked about their campaigns and advocacies to further immortalize and engrave the works, teachings and life of Rizal in every Filipino. It is indeed a promising project and I am very much excited for what's in store for the next generation.

Aside from the press-con, there was also a concert at the park as well as street performances by artists and designers. The final show of the night was held inside the Rizal museum. In the museum you will see the original and preserved farewell letter of Jose Rizal, the Mi Ultimo Adios. There was a short play reenacting the life especially the final moments of Rizal before he was executed. A wonderful June 19 indeed! A simultaneous celebration in Laguna was also held. In Calamba, the world's tallest statue of Jose Rizal was unveiled and inaugurated by President Noynoy Aquino.

Jose Rizal at 150: The Legacies of a Filipino Hero

Dr. Jose Rizal is a great inspiration to the Filipino people especially to the youth because his life, ideas and philosophies serve as our encouragement in taking pride in our country and reaching for our aspirations. He stood up for what he believed in; a value that each and every one of us must have to succeed in this journey called life.

The year 2011 marks the 150th birth anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal. With the purpose of engraving our national hero's memory, life, works, teachings and writings to today's generation, the whole Filipino nation will commemorate the sesquicentennial birth anniversary of Rizal on June 19, 2011.

As a contribution to this commemorative event, I recorded a short video clip of myself on why Rizal is my hero. You too can be a part of this cause. Threat to Seas is Threat to Humans! Save Philippine the Seas!

The coral reefs are home to millions of marine living things. And the Philippines is among the countries to have the most abundant and most diverse underwater ecosystems on the planet. These underwater environs are very essential that they are known as the rainforests and sanctuaries of the oceans. However, just like our forests, marine life is in grave danger. In fact, half of the world’s corals has already been wiped out. And the rest could become extinct in about a few decades more if we do not take proper action.

And here’s the disappointing part. Of all the marine life species, corals are among largest and most valuable in the market. A large number of species of corals are marketed worldwide as jewelries, accessories and other forms of decorative products.

The Threat to the Seas is a Threat to Humans

If the coral reefs disappear, not only we lose a source of amazing diversity and beauty but we also lose a barrier that regulates the waves produced by hurricanes and tsunamis. And more importantly, we lose fish sanctuaries that feed billions of people worldwide and generate millions of jobs and livelihood via the fishing industries.

Everything in this world is interconnected. We are a large network. Every living creature in this planet is a part of who we are. Whether on land, air or water, we are all one superb and sacred creations. By saving our seas, we are also saving ourselves.

Let's make every day a Save Philippine Seas Day! Save our coral reefs and seas before it is too late! Save the Philippine Seas!

The Great Road Trip: Banaue - Sagada - Baguio - La Union

This year's Holy Week celebration was one of the most memorable summer vacations that I've ever had. Along with a couple of old friends and some new friends from the Up With People group, we went on the road for three days and went mountain hopping (literally!). I was able to see for the first time two tourist destinations in northern Philippines - the Banaue Rice Terraces in Ifugao and the Sumaging Cave of Sagada in Mountain Province.

Banaue Rice Terraces, as what I have always heard from people who have been there, is breathtaking and jaw-dropping. I just wonder how the native Ifugao tribes managed to maintain the structure of the stair-like rice fields. No wonder it was described as the eighth wonder of the world.

My Sumaging Cave experience was also unforgettable because we went inside the cave and explored the many different rock formations naturally carved up thousands of years ago. And just near the Sumaging Cave was also one magnificent landmark that the natives of Mountain Province take pride - the Hanging Coffins of Sagada. FYI, there are only three countries in which tribes hang the coffins of their departed loved ones and ancestors as a sign of veneration and respect - China, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Fashion Dolls by Cholo Ayuyao and Noel Calma

The local government of Angeles city in cooperation with the Museo ning Angeles (Angeles Museum) holds a monthly program called Art in the Park which is held every last Friday of the month in front of the Museo ning Angeles. This event aims to gather Kapampangan artists and art enthusiasts with the purpose making the city as a center for culture and arts while keeping the Kapampangan traditions alive.

This month's program was participated by some of the most promising Kapampangan artists who shared inspiration to the Kapampangans by showcasing their passion for the arts and culture. There were bonsai exhibits and workshop, as well as musical and band performances. A book launching from one of the famous Kapampangan bloggers, Roy dela Cruz or popularly known as The Struggling Blogger and a paintings exhibit by Perfecto Mercado were also held. Angeles city Mayor Edgardo "Ed" Pamintuan and his constituents graced the event.

One of the most interesting highlights of this month's Art in the Park is the Fashion Dolls Exhibit by Cholo Ayuyao and Noel Calma. I have known these guys for quite a while and I can proudly say that they are the pride of the Kapampangans. Talent is rare and no doubt Cholo and Noel have it! Their designs are fantastic. I'm so proud of them. I can't help but admire their creations, though I don't really have an eye for fashion and design. Here are some of the photos of the Fashion Dolls:

Pochero sa Abuhan: Cebu's Wonder Bulalo

I know guys, I know. Easy! The title might seem a little confusing. The same thing happened to me the first time I went to Cebu and heard of this. But I'm warning you: get your bibs ready because you will drool big time while reading this post.

Apparently, what most of us know as Bulalo (Beef Bone Marrow and Vegetable Soup) is called Pochero in Cebu which is a totally different dish for us from the North. Well we don't have to argue on this. They call it Pochero in Cebu. Period. :) In fact, according to my friend who was born and raised there, his mom doesn't even know what Bulalo is. Weird! Haha.

Well, speaking of Pochero (or Bulalo), there is this very popular restaurant in Cebu that serves the best Bulalo down south. Abuhan Restaurant has been the pit stop for hungry stomachs for almost 30 years now. It appears that Pochero has already become a word synonymous to Abuhan because it is their best-seller and they have been known all over Cebu for this. Aside from Pochero, they also serve a lot of kick-ass Filipino dishes.

For some reason, Abuhan's Pochero is cooked perfectly than perfect as if it has been prepared by the gods (LOL) because the beef is so tender, and before you know it, all that's left is nothing but bones (I call them tosang bones, by the way. Haha). To describe it best in Tagalog, I must say that the food is "Simot Sarap". If you have been to Cebu before, I'm sure Abuhan was one of the first places that your "Best in Tourism" friends have recommended. Haha! If not, boy, you just missed half of your life! Well, at least you can go here the next time you visit Cebu.

Ibon-Ebon (Birds-Eggs) Festival of Candaba Pampanga

The Ibon Ebon Festival (Birds and Eggs Festival - February 1 to 2) of Candaba in Pampanga is one of the biggest festivities celebrated in the province that has been running successfully for three years now. This celebration is dedicated to the famous Candaba Swamp that serves as sanctuary to nearly 14,000 migratory birds (approximately 40 species) that flock each year and migrate to the different parts of the world.

A lot of foreign and local guests visit the event to witness this two-day multi-activity festival which includes street dances and parades, kite flying contests, food and cooking expo and a lot of activities and presentations aiming to promote for the protection of the environment.

This post was actually first published last year on my old blog. I thought of migrating all of my blog entries from other accounts and compile it here in my official blog.

[Manila, May 29, 2010] Due to the wonders of today's techology and thanks to SMS, two of my friends buzzed me up for meet up and hang out. Since its a lazy Saturday evening for me, I can only say YES or YES. Knowing me, I am always game for anything, especially on food trips! We dropped by first at my friend's new condo unit somewhere in Pasig city. Then we went over at Greenbelt to find a nice place to sit in.

After our endless walks and mall hopping, we decided to had dinner at Cyma Estiatorio. It is a Greek restaurant, that no doubt, made me realize how sumptuous Greek food is. I have never been a fan of Greek delicacy, but since that night, everything has changed. I love the Roka Salata - Greek salad with Bleu cheese and pie nuts. If you wanna try on something Greek, I suggest Cyma and you won't regret it, I promise. Cyma is at Greenbelt 2 and is near Barcino, Flapjacks and My Thai.

Well, I don't need to elaborate the title more. I will just let the photos do the bragging. The Helios Project International has never been this big. And oh, FYI, the group photo here is not even a full blast cast since a lot of the new members were still not around during the group photo shoot. Another FYI, we also have active members from the USA (California and Texas), Singapore, Dubai and even from Spain and Portugal. Beat that!

Instagram Captivates the Filipinos [Manila, Philippines]

Instagram is a free photo sharing and social networking platform that allows iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users to take photos, add different filter effects and instantly share them via a timeline feed in which your followers can view. To those who are not familiar with this app, just imagine the Twitter setup, but the only thing you will see are pictures from the people that you follow as well as the photos you have taken and uploaded. One great thing about Instagram is its section that features cool filter effects you can choose from which are free and are already pre-loaded as you download the app.

From the time it was launched, it has now over 3 million registered users. And because of its popularity, it has become so viral that it has influenced every single part of the globe. In fact, Instagram has just recently introduced one great way for users to get together in their specific locations; it was called Instameet. Of course, we also have a group for Filipino Instagrammers or Pinoy IG'ers as we call it and users are mostly concentrated in Manila, Philippines. We were even featured on Instagram's Official Blog. How cool is that!?

And as an avid fan and active user of Instagram, I had no second thoughts in meeting up with my fellow Pinoy IG'ers. The latest Manila Instameet was held last April 16 at Greenbelt Makati. I have finally met a couple of them and the meetup was a lot of fun. It was actually the 2nd Manila Instameet already, unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend the 1st meetup because of a schedule conflict. The group is getting bigger and bigger and I am excited to meet them again!

Xtremely Xpresso's Spanish Sardines Pizza and Seafood Spaghetti

I can't help but blog about the food at Xtremely Xpresso in MarQuee Mall. Last Saturday, since I have no pending works to do, I asked a couple of friends to go to the mall- to shop and to eat. And soon after shopping, we had dinner at Xtremely which is next to TGI Friday's and near Starbucks.

I was craving for seafoods so I decided to order for something that has shrimps or tuna. I was not really familiar with their best sellers since we usually go for coffee everytime we drop by at Xtremely. By gut-feel and random choice, I ordered Oil and Garlic Seafood Spaghetti, Spicy Spanish Sardines Pizza and a Peach-Mango Puree. I was not really expecting great food but guess what, it blew me away. They have the perfect seafood spaghetti - it has shrimps, mussels and olives with the noodles cooked al dente. I would definitely put this dish on my order list in the future.

The Spanish Sardines pizza tasted great as well and I love the mouth-watering strong aroma of sardines on it - thumbs up for this. However, the Peach-Mango shake tasted artificial and it's too sweet. I would go for their lemonade next time - my favorite.

I have one comment regarding the menu list – I think it needs to be improved. The list doesn't have any pictures of the food they serve which is obviously difficult to visualize especially for first timers. Everybody would agree with me that it really helps a lot in deciding when you see the pictures of the dishes.

Why Do We Shout in Anger?

A saint asked his disciples,
"Why do we shout in anger? Why do people shout at each other when they are upset?"

Disciples thought for a while, one of them said,
"Because we lose our calm, we shout because of that."

"But, why do we shout when the other person is just next to you?" asked the saint. "Isn't it possible to speak to him or her with a soft voice? Why do you shout at a person when you’re angry?"

Disciples gave some other answers but none satisfied the saint. Finally he explained, "When two people are angry at each other, their hearts distance a lot. To cover that distance they must shout to be able to hear each other. The angrier they are, the stronger they will have to shout to hear each other through that great distance."

Then the saint asked, "What happens when two people fall in love? They don’t shout at each other but talk softly, why? It’s because their hearts are very close. The distance between them is very small…"

The saint continued, "When they love each other even more, what happens? They do not speak, only whisper and they get even closer to each other in their love. Finally they even need not whisper, they only look at each other and that’s all. That is how close two people are when they love each other."

MORAL

When you argue, do not let your hearts get distant, do not say words that distance each other more, else there will come a day when the distance is so great that you will not find the path to return.

Point #2: Practice yourself in saying "I am sorry". This kind of mindfulness shows great respect to yourself and to the people surrounding you.

And lastly, above all, when you feel like shouting, keep in mind that you are an educated person and you live in a time where the Barbarians no longer exist. Just plain R-E-S-P-E-C-T. :)

Waste Management: Getting Rid of a Social Cancer

Solid waste is one of the major concerns in the country today and actually, even years way back. Chemicals and gases filling the atmosphere contribute a lot in the climate change resulting to the unusual behavior of Mother Nature. The growing consumption of plastics and toxic waste cast a big threat to our environment – our home. To date, Manila alone produces an approximate of 8000 tons of solid waste daily coming from households and business establishments. That's a lot of cubic meters of space being polluted and populated by dirt everyday.

In fact, our government spends billions of pesos each year just for garbage disposal which includes unclogging of pipes and sewerages from plastic wastes. The money could have been used in education, health and feeding programs.

As simple individuals, we can contribute a lot with these issues of waste in our nation. We can start from ourselves by disposing waste properly – do not litter. We have been taught with these when we were in the early school. We were even trained to segregate. Remember the bio-degradable and non-bio degradable?

I hope, as responsible citizens, we should realize that our country is not just a place where we live, rather, a big family in a big home where everyone and everything in it greatly affects who we become and who we bring into existence. So please, take good care of it.

Weekend Treat at New Well Being Spa Resort at Lohas Hotel, Clark Pampanga

Saturday was yet again another fun fun fun weekend because my usual rest day turned into a "pamper-yourself day". We spent the day at the New Well Being Spa Resort of the Lohas Hotel in Clark and indulged ourselves with a full body Swedish massage and a Jim Jil Bang sauna which is a Korean dry sauna. It was my first time here in Lohas and I am quite impressed because of its luxurious look and one of a kind customer service.

Since it's quite gloomy and drizzling outside when we arrived, we decided to have a look first at their cafeteria and try some of their food. I ordered tuna croissant and Korean green tea which I really loved because of its very different taste and relaxing feel. Right after our snack at the cafeteria, the attendant handed us our locker keys and clothes so we can get ready for the sauna. Bulgama room as what they call it is like the typical sauna room that we see on Korean or Japanese bath houses where you lie down on wooden mats with wood rest for the head and the room has these heated stones at the center releasing hot steam. Too bad I wasn't able to take pictures of the sauna since I left everything in my locker.

Shortly after the steam bath is a quick warm shower to get ready for the 1 hour full body Swedish massage. I almost fell asleep during the massage. Ria, my therapist did the very best massage for me. I will surely request for her on our next visit.

Before leaving, we again took the chair for dinner, this time, at the Korean restaurant of the resort hotel. I am not a fan of Korean cuisine but Samgyeopsal is just superb. It is a popular Korean dish that has thick slices of pork bacon served with Gochujang (Korean chili paste), Guiruemjang (made with salt, sesame oil and pepper powder) and various sidings and veggies. It's one great Korean dish that made me drool.

It was indeed a great and memorable experience I had at Lohas Hotel's New Well Being Spa Resort. It's in these times that you don't regret spending too much as long as you receive the best service and amazing customer satisfaction.

"Manila in 30 Images" Project with YoPho!

Last week, Young Photographers Philippines or YoPho arranged a photo bonding for its members and also as a chance to get to know everyone especially the new recruits. The event was titled: "Manila in 30 Images". Basically, it was a tour around Manila and all you have to do is to just shoot at anything or anyone in which you can better represent the city (and its history) through the years. I came in a little late since I had to work in the morning and unfortunately I wasn't able to complete all 30 images required - ONLY THREE! Not bad! Haha.

Anyway, aside from the hoopla of shooting and exploring the city, I had fun (pure fun!!) spending time with these guys (as always) and I am not saying this to add icing to the cake and to encourage more people to join the group. Hey! I know I have been inactive in the blogosphere for quite a while and I owe you guys a lot. It's just that school and work eat most of my time lately plus a few random activities which I had to attend to during my so-called hiatus mode. Well, one of the few remarkable activities which I recently joined is this famous :) and most promising :) :) photography group called Young Photographers Philippines (YoPho!). I attended the first meeting with the members of the group last July and since then, we regularly meet either for a photoshoot/photowalk or to just simply spend the day (night mostly) together over a bottle of beer or a videoke session. In fact, the first time I met with them, we did a photowalk around the streets of Binondo and went all the way to Intramuros. Not only do I get to practice and improve my camera diversion, but I also get to meet a lot of new people, a lot of new friends in which we share one solid passion – Photography obviously.

Young Photographers Philippines (YoPho!) is a non-profit organization composed of students, young professionals, artists and media people whose main objective is to pursue their passion for Photography and to mold the next generation of Filipino photographers. The group aims to provide a meaningful service to photographers by uplifting each and everyone's techinical knowledge as well as enhancing one's artistic and social capabilities concerning Photography thus molding the members to become competent, compassionate and committed Filipino Photographers.

Beware of Rich Vincent C. Arocena. Secure Your Photos

A certain Rich Vincent C. Arocena who is also from the Philippines caught my attention today. Mr. Arocena used two of my photos for a contest which is run by the National Geographic Channel Asia. He removed/cropped my watermarked name on the photos. Mr. Arocena never asked for permission regarding the use of my photos and he even claimed them as his. Good thing I was able to get a screenshot of his Facebook post before he even managed to remove it.

I believe that this bad behavior of Rich Vincent C. Arocena should be given proper actions. And I demand a sincere apology! We are ready to file formal legal complaints against Mr. Arocena but we would like to seek legal advices first before we proceed.

When traveling to Uncle Sam's country, San Francisco is definitely one of the best options at hand. The city where the hippie movement sprouted in the sixties has many interesting places to see and a fun leisure that spans the entire bay.

The best way to mobilize in this city is by cable car, a charming and picturesque half-way hybrid between bus and tram, which reaches all the sights. Among its most famous monuments are the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf Alcatraz, Lombard Street or Chinatown. San Francisco has the largest Chinese community and the most influential abroad. Places well known to travelers enjoy discovering that reality is always stranger than fiction.

San Francisco wine country is one the most essential names the city is well known for because of its many different winery run by families and passed on from generation to generation. Along with the different activities San Francisco has to offer, the Golden Gate Park is one the tourists' favorites. It is the large city park which in turn contains important sites as Shakespeare Garden containing over 200 species of flowers mentioned in his works, or the beautiful Japanese garden which is decorated with bonsai and pagodas. Well, I beg to differ because for me, having to stay at home all day is really not a burden -- as long as I have my camera (and Facebook) with me (laughs).

It was a typical lazy and not-so hectic afternoon for me. I was lying down in bed, face on the ceiling. "Tik tok! Tik tok!" says the clock. 1, 2, 3... until 60. Another minute passed. Then, another minute. And another. Until I slowly felt the silence, it's deafening me. After a while, I glanced at the clock and each minute seemed to last like hours. Then my sight zoomed in and focused on this low-profile creature parked lonely at the far corner of my room. Bang! Perfect crime! And the rest was a shutter-happy history. :)

Gratitude: More Than Just a Restaurant

Today's featured restaurant is Gratitude located at Bonifacio Global City in Taguig and is partly owned by two of my friends from the Lightworkers, Analei Atienza and Kahlil Bagatsing. Lightworkers, for your information (source: Facebook) is a non-denominational group aims to support each other by being both a teacher and a student. We meet once a month just to gather, to share, to teach and to learn. This group has no structure, as we all believe that we are all equal; that we are all here on Earth to love, to share, to learn and to teach.

Well, going back to the restaurant review.. The moment you come inside, you'll find yourself amazed because someone will welcome you and ask you to pick from a bowl of rolled papers with inspirational messages. The menu is not like any other restaurants because each dish is named with unique virtues that you claim as you order it (I Am Amazing, I Am Blessed, etc.). I Am Empowered is one of my favorites. It is their version of Cioppino with shrimps, clams, mussels and fish fillet cooked in tomatoes and wine sauce.

One more thing that makes this restaurant special is that for every dish, you'll see on the menu how much calories, protein carbohydrates and fats it has, therefore, lets you keep an eye on your diet. So if you haven't been at Gratitude yet, I recommend you give it a try and explore the many delicous dishes they serve.

Instituto Cervantes Cheers for Spain

The World Cup finals suddenly became a craze here in the Philippines (well, in my school at least) because Spain vied for the title, a first time in their history. It was a sizzling match between Spain and The Netherlands. Instituto Cervantes, gathered each and every supporter of Spain in the metro and organized a free live viewing of the Finals via satellite cable. Most who came were all in red to show solid support for Spain. Unfortunately, I didn't find any red shirt in my closet then. Good thing someone offered me to put red and yellow paint on my face.

The whole Instituto Cervantes was filled with deafening cheers from fans, all shouting for Spain while they raise their beer bottles for the win. Well, Paul the octopus was right after all, because Spain bagged the FIFA World Cup champion title. Something that Spain should take pride of since it's their first gold cup trophy in FIFA World Cup history.

There comes a point in our lives where we feel as if the world is crushing down on us and the only choice that we have is either to give up or to get up and continue walking. If only we have superhuman powers like superman or batman, then we can make this world become a little less complicated, right? What if we were given the chance to possess supernatural powers and abilities? Do you think we could become happier and more contented? I have no idea.

We know for a fact that our country, the Philippines is a land full of poor souls and hopeless spirits. And if you think you have the biggest problem in the world, ~~shame on you,~~ look to the streets where you frequently walk. Observe the sides of the malls you endlessly shop at, and ask yourself if you are being fair enough when you get depressed not having to buy the latest cellphones, expensive signature clothes, that dream car or luxury vacation you've always longed for. Would you even consider these as problems, knowing that there are starving kids in every corner of your city? Well, I'm not trying to sound saintly here because I myself am guilty with this. Actually, I squeezed inspiration within me that's why I was able to write this post.

The tentacles of poverty and ignorance in our country, sad to say, is quite challenging and almost impossible to extinguish unless a human messiah who has the answers to all our needs will lead our country.

What we can do to at least help our country in recovering with its misfortunes and hardships is by grabbing every opportunity that's within our reach which can lead us in being better and better each day. Ignorance is not an excuse. It will not get you anywhere or save you from anything. Remember that you hold the steering wheel of your own life: take the right lane and make u-turns if necessary.

He actually organized a soft opening last Saturday exclusively for his blogger friends - us, kami, nosotros. ~~Triligual pa ah!~~ :)).

As most of you know, I am studying spanish at Instituto Cervantes. And just last week right after our class, we all agreed to have a group lunch at the Cas¡no Español just inside the compound where Instituto Cervantes is. This is not the typical gaming room that you might be thinking (PAGCOR) which is filled with neon lights and sexy bunny girls because the place is serene and relaxing. And they serve great paella, too! We all had a great time and of course, the never consigned to oblivion picture-taking moment.

I have to admit that I really am enjoying the feeling of being back to school and it seems like I am back to my teen stage years. Ah, I miss those days. Now I know how discontented the human mind is, because back when I was in college, I hated the idea of going to school to the point that I got burnt out and wished I was already working. Shortly after graduation, I had my first job which I enjoyed very much as well - AT FIRST. Then came to a point that I got sick of the routine and every waking moment became a nightmare to me. After months of doing the same thing over and over again, I finally made a tough decision.

I chose not to put an end to my learning so I went back to school to learn a very rich language. I have always been fascinated with the different languages and I hope that one day, I get the chance to learn each of them, one by one.

Most people nowadays are becoming more aware of the fact that our environment is at risk due to the many forms of abuses that people from all over the world is doing, slapping mother nature in the face big time. As concerned inhabitants of our mother nature, we should all take the step into preserving our scarce resources.

Making a difference is never hard. In fact, simple things like turning off the AC or unplugging the television when not in use will really help a lot in saving energy at the same time it also helps in lessening the carbon emissions to the atmosphere. Our parents would always teach us about gas and electricity reducing tips for the eco-conscious when we were young, and now is the time to apply those tips so we can preserve our natural resources up until the future generations.

Now is the time to go GREEN. Tiny things can make a mighty difference.

It's only less than a week before the May 2010 Philippine Elections and I guess most of us are itching to try out the newly implemented automated voting system. Some might get confused because not everyone has background or technical know-how with this type of voting system. But as per the TV ad campaign (May bilog may bilog na hugis itlog), all you have to do is to shade the circle (or oval I guess) of the candidate you are voting for. As simple as that.

To those who are still not aware or unsure with regard to their precinct numbers and don't know which school to go to, you may visit www.comelec.gov.ph for an easy way to find out your voting precinct information (click here to go directly to Comelec's precint finder). I tried searching mine today and I was satisfied with how quick and easy the search came up considering it's a government website (because most government-run websites in the Philippines are either taking too slow to load up or they are always down. Laughs!)

Here are some of the pictures from the yearly celebration of the International Book Day (Dia Del Libro) at Instituto Cervantes de Manila. This is where I am taking my Spanish Language course.

There were a lot of activities aside from the book bargain (I bought a couple of cheap books, by the way!). And the food was ~~hella~~ great! We watched the Bersong Europinoy 2, too. Bersong Europinoy is a Filipino European poetry recital in which different participants from the European Union connives with Filipino poets in the recital. There was also a film showing of Spanish movies but that was in the morning - too bad we came in afternoon.

Summer is still around the corner and I am so eager to jump off and dive in the beach. Too bad I am busy with my studies now that's why I can't find much time to arrange a beach break with my friends in the province. I really miss the smell of warm air and the sound of the waves. It's been a year since we last went there and I feel that my body is itching to go there again. What I got were just hand-made fridge magnets and a Boracay shirt.

Never allow others to take control of yourself for it is in that case you start losing. In our world that is full of masked faces and forged truths, we should always choose whom we give our trust to. You hold the wheel of your life and you are the captain of your own ship; make U-turns if you desire.

One of the powerful lines explains that each and everyone of us is uniquely created and no matter what we do, there will always be persons whom we will look up to at the same time persons that will give us pride and make us feel proud about ourselves. During our Banaue Holy Week vacation just a few weeks ago, at the garden of this hotel that we checked in, I stumbled upon this plant having these strange fruits that seem like thorned balloons. According to my ~~creative imagination and very fast~~ analysis, it's like a fusion between a sea urchin and a green golf ball. It's hollow and seems harmless though.

Up until now, I still can't digest into my system that such plant like this ever exist (in the country, at least) so I decided to blog about it in case I have some botanist readers who happen to know what this strange little plant is called. For the meantime, let me call it "Steven Sea-golf" (laughs).

Living independently makes you learn a lot of things. Yeah, I would say it's survival of the fittest. From the time I moved here in Manila, I am so proud to see myself learn many different things that I never attempted doing when I was in the province living with my family. Today is a different phase in my life. This time, I am taking the steering wheel and will try to captain my own ship.

First and foremost, I discovered that I can cook! Well, thanks to YouTube and Panlasang Pinoy's channel because I was able to watch "how to cook" videos and do the actual cooking simultaneously - and thanks to Wi-Fi and mobile streaming! I feel like I have grown more as person from the time I started living independently, and I am so darn proud of myself (taps his back :D).

And right now, aside from cooking, I am learning the art of meal planning. That is, learning how to plan my entire food and what to cook for the whole week. Because what I do is I go to the grocery store once a week and buy all the stuff that I need for a seven-day period. This is quite challenging because I am still in the "trial and error" stage wherein I have to carefully monitor my spendings so as not to waste food just because I bought way too much for the week.

Anyway, things are flowing smoothly as planned and I am not screwing things up, so far. Strength, more strength please! I need more driving force and positive pushes for me to carry on. (Laughs!)

Hangin' Out with "Up with People" in Manila

Jamie invited us about two weeks ago to meet some of her friends from the Up with People (UWP) Cast A 2010 who had a mini mall tour at SM North Edsa. Actually, she is one of the host families of some of the UWP casts (Michael, Kyle and Paul) who will stay here in the Philippines for nearly a month.

Up with People is an organization comprised of young people from all over the world who sing and perform internationally to bring inspiration and motivation while they do community service and various activities involving the youth and the young-at-heart, worldwide. The organization aims to develop leadership and life skills of each and every cast. Each Up with People "cast" of up to 110 participants travels together to at least two continents and often to more than six countries with diverse cultural, political, and economic conditions.

The boys requested for an American dinner so we took them to Wendy's. It's been fun hangin' out with these guys! Here are some of our photos:

Beautiful View from the North of Philippines

We spent the Holy Week over the beautiful places in the north of our country (Banaue - Sagada - Baguio - La Union). The great road trip started Wednesday night and we came back home around Saturday evening. I was able to witness right before my eyes the breath-taking view from the Banaue Rice Terraces in Ifugao province and the Hanging Coffins and Sumaging Cave of Sagada in Mountain Province. It is so cool to see the mountains transformed into a stair-like rice field. Good thing I have my eye glasses with me that is why I was able to see the view clearer. Well, after I upgrade my lens grade, I think, views from places that I go to would become even better.

We spent almost four days on the road seeing the same old faces of each other. But the trip was really really worth it. There are actually a lot of tourists who visit the place all time of the year. And when I say tourist, I am referring to both foreign and Filipinos. It's overwhelming to see fellow Filipinos to feel proud of our own treasures and natural resources. I hope that the people will continue preserving these places so that the next generations will still witness how nature carved its majestic possession in our Beautiful country.

Holy Week Getaway Up North

I am excited for the Holy Week break because my friends and I agreed to spend the holiday on the road. We will head up north of the country and go hiking on the famous Banaue Rice Terraces.

Well, I have to pack things up in a while as we will be leaving later tonight. I have to bring a lot of summer clothes because right after we've been to Banaue, our final destination would be a beach somewhere in La Union. We will also go to Sagada which is known for its breath-taking virgin caves and pine forests.

Well for now, I have to window shop online for some new men's clothes that I will need for the holy week. I have this all-time favorite clothes store that has categorized items and a style guide, making it easy to look for clothes. What I like about it is its user-friendly interface which makes it easily accessible for anyone regardless of age and internet know-how.

I have to go now and prepare. Have a meaningful Holy Week everyone!

Manila's Victims of Misfortune

I am now officially staying here in Manila. For how long? I don't know. I am with a couple of friends who took advantage of a cheap condo unit here in Pasay city. In fact, we just moved in last Monday and we're still in the process of fixing things up. Luckily, Internet connection installation is so quick here via Wi-Tribe 4G Internet of Liberty Networks that's why I was able to blog things up as it happens. :)

Yesterday, I decided to go to the grocery store to buy snacks and something to prepare for dinner. It's my first time to walk around the streets of Pasay and I am still coping up with the milieu.

While walking, I saw a young mother feeding her two kids with spaghetti leftovers (photo courtesy of my Sony Ericsson K810i camera phone). I was finally convinced that life is much different here in Manila than in the province of Pampanga. It's a fast-paced environment which leaves you no choice but to strive on your own and work harder. Everyone you meet in the streets seems like 100% of their minds are occupied with thoughts, worries and responsibilities. :(

Poor and malnourished families, especially the children are everywhere begging for food and money to people they meet. I can't believe how the government is dealing with this kind of situation. I think, the authorities should focus more into providing and promoting education to the Filipinos more importantly to the poor communities. Send everyone to school (along with a feeding program) and I am sure we will see progress in the next few years or so.

It's summertime once again here in the Philippines and I am sure that most of us are already looking for some new places to hang out and enjoy the heat of the sun. A couple of my friends are actually asking me out for a vacation late this month or early next month.
